Eecon#9 The era of cola for 200 yen

【Vending Machines at the Limit】 The era of 'Coca-Cola' priced at 200 yen is approaching, with a price increase this autumn leading to a significant increase in loss-making vending machines by 20-30%. Suntory and Dydo are also struggling, prompting a possible acceleration of collaborative efforts.

Due to rising costs such as raw material expenses, the beverage industry continues to experience a flurry of price increases. In particular, in vending machines where beverage companies can basically sell at a fixed price, product prices have been rising at a rapid pace. Coca-Cola, mentioned at the beginning, is set to implement another price increase in October 2025, reaching the significant price of 200 yen. The difference between the in-store prices at supermarkets and drugstores and vending machine prices has now nearly doubled for certain products.

Beverage companies are advancing the removal of unprofitable vending machines. According to a survey by Beverage Research Institute, the number of operational machines, which was 2.47 million in 2014, is expected to decrease to 2.04 million by 2024. Nevertheless, nearly 10% of vending machines are still considered to be in the red. Moreover, beverage companies are planning a major price increase in October 2025, and if this leads to reduced customer numbers, it is said that the percentage of unprofitable vending machines could soar to 20-30%.

I haven't used vending machines at all since they became expensive. I find myself wishing we could go back to the time when things could be bought for 100 yen.
